What does the term 'Phishing' mean?

Phishing is the term used when fraudsters gather confidential information by sending out emails, instant messages that direct individuals to bogus websites or directly by phone.

Phishing emails or messages claim to be from a reputable companies such as Barclays, but are sent by fraudsters.

To help protect yourself:

  • Treat any unsolicited emails or calls that ask for confidential information as suspicious.
  • If you’re unsure the call is genuine, call the company’s switchboard to confirm it is.
